Electric vehicles have been around for a very long time, but they were not popular because of various shortcomings like limited range and low speed. Tesla Motors (TSLA) was the first company to change all that, and as a result, it gained a lot of media attention and saw a massive jump in its share price in 2013.
However, many big and established automakers like Toyota Motor (TM) and Hyundai are looking for the next big technology to power tomorrow's cars and have bet on hydrogen fuel cells. Toyota is so confident that fuel cell electric vehicles, or FCEVs, will dominate the automobile market in the years to come and has even projected to sell 5,000-10,000 vehicles per year. Furthermore, Air Liquide SA is planning to expand its business by constructing filling stations for FCEVs as it foresees growing demand for such vehicles.
Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, thinks that the technology is a dead end, but you'd expect him to talk down the competition as he is betting big bucks on EVs. The success of FCEVs will be bad for Tesla and its investors, and given the various advantages that FCEVs have over EVs, it may overshadow EVs and dominate the auto market in the long run. Let's take a quick look at these advantages.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
ExOne has already jumped out to great success in its recent debut, as it announced its fourth-quarter earnings just six weeks ago. The company managed to beat expectations by boosting revenue substantially, reversing a year-ago loss by posting a modest profit. By specializing in large-scale industrial objects, ExOne has done its best to differentiate itself from 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD ) and its more consumer-focused printer line. Moreover, with its ability to print metal objects, it hopes to stand out versus Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS ) , which has found success serving the same kinds of industrial businesses that ExOne is targeting.

3D Systems Corp. (DDD) was closely watched after it gained 7% Thursday to trade at $92.10. Shares were up another 2% premarket. Canaccord Genuity raised its price target on the 3D printing company ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

My maxim as a small investor is "the future belongs to the youth." That holds true during a recovery or despite a recession. I consult my young adult children to reach mutual investment decisions, or give a little seed money to co-opt their interest as stakeholders. We buy name-brand commodities (such as beverages or drugs), entertainment, new products, and those companies in their supply chains that carve new needs and emerging domestic and global markets. I am not buying so long as the government is shutdown. Innovation is the common thread. I will look for long buying opportunities in innovative companies such as 3-D Systems (DDD), 3-M (MMM), Corning (GLW), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Google (GOOG), Nike (NKE), Sam Adams (SAM), Viacom (VIA), Samsung.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By CanadianValue]
The Fund made a number of new investments in 2011, adding 14 new securities to the Fund while parting with two holdings. However, none of the new purchases amounted to more than 1% of assets of year-end. Our largest investment during the year was in Corning (GLW), the glass maker. We were attracted to Corning dominant position in the lucrative business of supplying glass for the liquid crystal displays found in flat-screen TVs, computer monitors, and mobile phones. Only three other companies in the world are capable of producing this highly specialized glass in any volume. Unfortunately, the reality of consumer electronics is that as gadgets get cheaper every year component suppliers face constant deflation, too. As sales growth of flat-screen TVs slowed in 2011, glass manufacturers reduced inventory under severe price pressure. It also suffered from a customer defection at one of its joint ventures. Consequently, net income fell by 21%. Going forward, the company's performance will chiefly turn on its ability to moderate glass price declines. In the meantime the business is highly cash generative and management has the chance to deploy the proceeds in constructive ways such as its recently initiated stock repurchase plan.

Compare to benchmarks
It's also smart to compare a stock's performance with relevant benchmarks. Think of glass and fiber giant Corning (NYSE: GLW ) , for example. Many see it as undervalued and have high hopes for its Gorilla Glass and its flexible Willow Glass, but it's also been whacked by a sluggish LCD market. Thus, it has been struggling some in recent years. - [By Selena Maranjian]
Finally, Barrow, Hanley's biggest closed positions included Synovus Financialand Applied Materials. Other closed positions of interest include Corning (NYSE: GLW ) , which has not been a standout performer in recent years, in part due to low prices and demand for LCD substrates. The stock recently hit a 52-week high, but still sports a P/E ratio of just 13. Some worry that Corning's acclaimed Gorilla Glass is threatened by rising interest in sapphire, while others argue that it's simply a bargain at recent levels.

Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) is a stock that we have told readers is an incredible value and one with somewhat limited competition. Now we have a deal with Samsung, and one analyst has decided to use the 14% gain to take profits by issuing a downgrade right into the strength of the move based upon the closing price on Wednesday. Sterne Agee has just downgraded Corning to Neutral from Buy based upon the impact now being fully reflected in the stock price.

Even as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) continues to get relentlessly crushed today following Cirrus Logic's (NASDAQ: CRUS ) preliminary release last night, there may still be two silver linings for Apple investors. The data can't all be bad (it's mostly bad).

The present market situation for chipmaker Cirrus Logic (CRUS) doesn appear to be good. The company has lost its momentum and has been reporting upsetting results. The stock is declining and looks like a bad pick at present.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Lauren Pollock]
Osiris Therapeutics Inc.(OSIR) said Friday a proposed ruling from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services won’t immediately affect reimbursements for its Grafix stem-cell product. The regenerative medicine company said Grafix will maintain its current reimbursement status — also called transitional pass-through status — potentially through late 2015.
- [By Alexander Maxwell]
One of the companies attempting to develop a better treatment for chronic diabetic foot ulcers is Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR ) . Earlier this month, Osiris shares more than doubled as the company announced positive data for its CDFU drug Grafix. The study results were very impressive to say the least; the study was stopped early due to the overwhelming efficacy exhibited by the treatment. A main highlight is the fact that 62% of Grafix patients had their wound closed at 12 weeks, compared to only 21% of patients using conventional methods. Clearly, the efficacy in this endpoint was overwhelming. Grafix also achieved all of the secondary endpoints for the trial, and more importantly demonstrated a relatively benign safety record.
- [By Maxx Chatsko]
Additionally, stem cell therapies have remained elusive as the industry's ultimate Holy Grail. Osiris (NASDAQ: OSIR ) received Canadian approval for the world's first stem cell drug, Prochymal, for children battling acute graft-versus-host disease, or GvHD, last year. The approval meant more symbolically than to the bottom line, but it definitely put the potential of stem cells front and center for investors.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Keith Speights]
Temporary staffing agencies also felt the brunt of the employer mandate push-back. Shares ofRobert Half International (NYSE: RHI ) , for example, slipped 5% on the day after the Obamacare delay was announced. The staffing agency reported earlier this year that it was receiving lots of inquiries from employers with around 50 employees, with the implication being that companies would use temporary workers to avoid meeting the 50-employee threshold for the Obamacare mandate.
