10 Best Industrial Disributor Stocks To Watch For 2014

Samsung (SSNLF) is facing increased scrutiny from Apple (AAPL) and is concerned about its own over-reliance on Google. That's left it with few choices, so it's increasingly looking to go it alone, a risky proposition.

Friends and Enemies

Samsung and Apple became close friends when the Korean giant stepped up to provide key parts for the iPod. As that product grew in popularity, so too did the relationship between the two partners. When the iPhone came out, Samsung's involvement was a given.

Since that time, however, Samsung has brought out its own competing products. They look remarkably similar to Apple's iPhones and iPads. They are the only truly competitive offerings to Apple in the market, which recently announced that it would start to shift some of its chip needs to a new supplier. Although the two will continue to do business, it's clear that Apple wants to diversify away from a partner that is also a competitor.

Androids

Google's Android mobile operating system is the foundation on which Samsung has based its most popular products. However, that's a big risk, since Google is also in the cell phone space and is increasingly creating other devices, too. To that end, Samsung is set to launch its own mobile OS, called Tizen later this year. That's a risky bet to make at a difficult juncture for the company.

I even recorded a tax loss carry-forward on my original purchase of CAMT for which I had paid $2.05 per share. It seems that I was a slow learner in regard to the necessity of selling AOI companies long before they entered a cyclical trough in their earnings. Happily, I have since remedied that problem. For informational purposes I must disclose that in the spring, I repurchased shares of CAMT and made a larger purchase in a Cyberoptics (CYBE) another AOI company, which was near a multiyear low at the time.

Knapp and Slover were also kind enough to provide a screen of stocks that could outperform. They started with the Russell 2000, removed the smallest 40% based on market cap (the aforementioned liquidity issues), then selected the 5% worst performers from among the 30% cheapest stocks based on book-to-price. The result is a bunch of names you never heard of, including Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI), Fusion-IO (FIO), Walter Energy (WLT), Hecla Mining (HL) and Molycorp(MCP).

Yet there could be another shoe to drop. Across the industry, companies that have tied their dividends to prevailing bullion prices or financial results have had to pull back on their payouts. For instance, Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) reduced its second-quarter dividend from $0.14 per share to $0.12, and the drop would have been larger if the company hadn't changed its calculation method to smooth changes in operating cash flow by looking back over four quarters. Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL  ) cut its dividend by 80% in May, and with silver prices having fallen further, the dividend could potentially disappear in the future. Newmont reduced its dividend by 18% in the first quarter, reversing its most recent increase the previous quarter. But with gold another 20% lower, further cuts could be imminent.
