Blackstone preps nontraded real estate fund for the fee-only crowd

Private-equity powerhouse The Blackstone Group Inc. is raising funds for a new nontraded real estate mutual fund designed to appeal to fee-only financial advisers.

Blackstone is raising money for the Blackstone Real Estate Income Fund II, which will offer shares that are not subject to a sales load, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Sales loads on nontraded real estate investment trusts, which are typically more than 10%, have made the products popular in the independent broker-dealer community, but have also been a major point of criticism from financial adviser channels that are more focused on fees, such as independent registered investment advisers.

Instead of a sales load, the Blackstone Real Estate Income Fund II will have an ongoing 12(b)-1 fee of 25 basis points and also have a 1.5% expense ratio and 15% performance fee, similar to a hedge fund.

The fund will invest in the usual smorgasbord of real estate investments, such as commercial mortgage-backed securities, private real estate debt and loans.

Blackstone expects to complete its fundraising by March 31, according to the filing.

Peter Rose, a spokesman for the firm, declined to comment while the fund is in a quiet period.

The Blackstone fund is the latest sign of innovation in the booming nontraded real estate fund space.

In January, Bank of America Merrill Lynch became the first wirehouse to sell a nontraded REIT through its advisers. The Jones Lang LaSalle Income Property Trust that Merrill choose comes with a 2.5% sales load.

Nontraded real estate investment trusts recorded a record $20 billion in sales in 2013, up from $10.3 billion in 2012, and industry watchers expect another strong year of growth in 2014.

In America, we've just finished the annual holiday focused on giving thanks.

We stop to remember all the many things we are thankful for — family, friends, health, home. But giving thanks in your small business is important, too.

The holidays are a particularly good time to recognize the contributions that others make to your success.

As you navigate the holiday season, be certain to show your gratitude to the many people who help your small business succeed throughout the year — customers, employees, even vendors.

You can demonstrate your gratitude in many ways. One of the easiest is to just say, "Thank you." Those are two of the most powerful words in business.

When you let others know that you recognize and appreciate the contribution they make to your success, they often are even more motivated to do their best for you.

But you can show thankfulness in a number of other ways.

Customers. Want customers to remember you? Then let them know you remember them.

How you demonstrate your thanks may depend, in part, on how significant each customer is to your business and your bottom line.

1. Send greeting cards. Holiday cards are a time-honored tradition to let clients and customers know you are thinking of them.

The easiest way to organize this is to track your contacts in a customer relationship management (CRM) program year 'round. If you haven't already done that, start now.

You'll use your list all year to e-mail customers and prospects about deals, special offers! , and news about your small business.

2. Give affordable gifts. You may want to do a bit more for your best customers to show your gratitude.

In my company, I've sent boxes of chocolates for many years. During that time, many have told me they look forward to receiving their candy every holiday season.

3. Throw a holiday party or open house. Invite your clients to a festive get-together in your place of business.

If you have a brick-and-mortar store, invite your best customers for an exclusive "friends and family" event. Offer hors d'oeuvres, door prizes, demonstrations, and special deals.

4. Invite your best customers to lunch or dinner. Did a certain customer make a huge impact on your small business this year? Take that person out for a special meal.

Employees. Everyone wants acknowledgment for a job well done.

It's just human nature to try harder to please those who appreciate us than those who ignore us. Take time to thank your employees, and not just during the holidays.

1. Catch people doing something right. Be certain to notice when your employees excel at their job or do something out of the ordinary.

2. Acknowledge employees in front of others. You maximize the effect of your thank-you when you say it within earshot of others.

Just be certain you do it in a way that is not intended to make other employees feel as if you are criticizing them or playing favorites.

3. Give small, tangible rewards. While bonuses and raises are important for long-term employee motivation and retention, small gifts help reinforce your verbal acknowledgments.

In my business, I used to giv! e candy b! ars for small but important accomplishments. Employees laughed but also enjoyed the recognition.

4. Celebrate successes. Throughout the year, take time to celebrate successes — such as finishing a long-term project, landing a big new client, reaching an important milestone.

Involve your whole team. It's a great way to say thank you and a great morale booster.

Vendors. Holiday gifts aren't just for clients and employees.

Does a certain vendor extend you particularly favorable payment terms? Do they go that extra mile to help you manage a huge order you landed?

If you have an excellent relationship with a vendor, be sure to acknowledge that at this time of year, too. Include that person on your gift or card list.

I can assure you if you send a small gift, he or she will be surprised — who sends gifts to vendors after all? — and very appreciative.

Your family. Don't forget the many contributions your family makes to your business success.

So be certain to thank them for helping make your success possible.

"In the next few months, we could take a step down in our pace of purchase," Ben Bernanke told a congressional committee at the end of last month. Sounds innocuous enough, but with those 16 words, the Federal Reserve chairman ignited a global repricing of assets.

First and foremost, stocks have been, and continue to be, hammered. After hitting an all-time intraday high of 15,542 on May 22, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has fallen more than 800 points as of 3:20 p.m. EDT today. Following an overnight sell-off in Asia, the blue-chip index is down 89 points, or 0.6%, having bounced back from losses of more than 200 points earlier in the day.

Furthermore, with reduced inflation expectations come lower gold prices. Since last October, the precious metal and inflation hedge has lost nearly a third of its value, dropping from about $1,800 an ounce down to about $1,300 an ounce today. Unsurprisingly, the world's largest gold exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , has followed suit, declining by 22% over the past six months alone.

    Cassandra Hubbart, AOL NEW YORK -- Hulu has failed to persuade a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the video streaming service of illegally sharing users' viewing history with Facebook (FB) and business metrics company ComScore (SCOR) U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco on Friday rejected Hulu's argument that viewers needed to show actual injury to recover damages, even if they qualified as "aggrieved" persons under a 1988 federal law protecting the privacy of video renters. That law, the Video Privacy Protection Act, was adopted after a newspaper in 1987 published an article about movies that the Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork had rented. Hulu had argued that the law "was not adopted to impose multibillion dollar liability on the transmission of anonymous data where no one suffers any actual injury." Beeler, however, concluded that "the statute requires only injury in the form of a wrongful disclosure" before damages might be available. She didn't rule on the merits of the case. The Company transfer stations receive, compact and transfer solid waste collected primarily by various collection operations, for transport to disposal facilities by larger vehicles.

The Company�� MRFs, receive, sort, bale and res! ell recyclable materials originating from the municipal solid waste stream, including newsprint, cardboard, office paper, containers and bottles. The Company operates six MRFs in geographic areas served by its collection divisions. Revenues are received from municipalities and customers in the form of processing fees, tipping fees and commodity sales. The Company's MRFs, two of which are located in Vermont, two in Massachusetts and two in New York, are large-scale, high-volume facilities that process over 0.4 million tons per year of recycled materials delivered to them by municipalities and commercial customers under long-term contracts. The Company also operates MRFs as an integral part of its core solid waste operations, which generally process recyclables collected from its various residential collection operations.

Eastern region

The Eastern region consists of wastesheds located in Maine, southern and central New Hampshire and central and eastern Massachusetts. The Eastern region is vertically integrated, with transfer, landfill, organics and processing and recycling assets serviced by its collection operations. In February 2013, the Company aligned management of the NCES landfill with the Eastern region. NCES had been historically aligned with the Western region. In December, 2012 the Company acquired BBI Waste Services (BBI), which gave the Company additional hauling and transfer capacity in southern Maine.

Western region

The Western region includes wastesheds located in Vermont, north and south western New Hampshire and eastern New York that were previously included in the eliminated Central region. The portion of New York served by the Western region includes Clinton (operation of the Clinton County landfill), Franklin, Essex, Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Rennselaer and Albany counties. The Western region also consists of wastesheds in upstate New York (which includes Ithaca, Elmira, Oneonta, Lowville, Potsdam, Geneva, Auburn, Dunkirk, Jame! stown and! Olean). Recycling

Recycling is the processors and marketers of recycled materials in the eastern United States, consists six MRFs that process and then market recyclable materials that municipalities and commercial customers deliver to them under long-term contracts. Three of the 6 MRFs are leased, the other three are owned. During fiscal year ended April 30, 2013, Recycling segment processed and/or marketed approximately 0.5 million tons of recyclable materials including tons marketed through the Company's commodity brokerage operation. Recycling facilities are located in Vermont, New York and Massachusetts.

Shoemaker Wolverine Worldwide (NYSE: WWW  ) announced a 2-for-1 stock split Thursday.

Anyone who owns a share of Wolverine Worldwide stock on October 1 will own two shares of stock when the split takes effect on November 1. In practice, however, anyone who owns a share of the stock even after the October 1 record date will, on November 1, find that they own two shares.

Commenting on the move, company CEO Blake W. Krueger explained that, "Declaring a stock split underscores the confidence our Board of Directors has in our Company strategy, our team's ability to execute, and the very significant growth opportunities that lie ahead."

In such situations, a company splitting stock will not ordinarily see a significant change in market capitalization after the split. However, each new "split" share will sell for a share price close to half of what a share cost pre-split.

Wolverine also announced Thursday that its new per-share, quarterly dividend payment will $0.06 after the split. Thus, pre-split, the dividend would have been $0.12. The dividend yield will remain approximately 0.8%.

    Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

    That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

    ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

    Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

    That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

    Don't be early on this trade.

    Shares of UPL spiked up a bit on Friday after the company said it moved to a profit for its second quarter on improved revenue and the absence of major ceiling test writedowns. The company reported net income of $116.4 million, or 75 cents per share, vs. a loss of $1.19 billion, or $7.76 per share, for the same period last year.

    From a technical perspective, UPL jumped higher here right above its 200-day moving average of $20.32 and back above its 50-day moving average of $21.48 with monster upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UPL within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if UPL manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $21.96 to $22.47 with high volume. At last check, UPL closed near its intraday high of $22.50 and volume was well above its three-month average action.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UPL as long as it's trending above its 50-day $21.48 or its 200-day at $20.32 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 3.19 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UPL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $24.52. Any high-volume move above that level will then put $26 to $27.60, or even $30 into range for shares of UPL.

Medical Properties Trust, Inc., incorporated on August 27, 2003, is a self-advised real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on investing in and owning net-leased healthcare facilities. The Company conducts substantially all of its business through MPT Operating Partnership, L.P. The Company acquires and develops healthcare facilities and leases the facilities to healthcare operating companies under long-term net leases, which require the tenant to bear the costs associated with the property. The Company also makes mortgage loans to healthcare operators collateralized by their real estate assets. In addition, the Company selectively makes loans to certain of its operators through its taxable REIT subsidiaries. Affiliates of Prime Healthcare Services, Inc. (Prime) leased 11 facilities pursuant to master lease agreements. The master leases are for 10 years commencing July 3, 2012 and contain two renewal options of five years each. The initial lease rate is generally consistent with the blended average rate of the prior lease agreements. However, the annual escalators, which in the prior leases were limited, have been increased to reflect 100% of CPI increases, along with a 2% minimum floor. The master leases include repurchase options substantially similar to those in the prior leases, including provisions establishing minimum repurchase prices equal to the Company's total investment. The Global Banking and Markets segment is comprised of the sub-segments, which include corporate and the treasury division. Corporate consists of companies that are foreign multinationals or part of a Chilean economic group with sales of over $20.9 million. As of December 31, 2012, these clients represented 9.8% of its total loans outstanding. Customers in this segment are o! ffered a ! range of products, including commercial loans, leasing, factoring, foreign trade, mortgage loans, checking accounts, cash management, treasury services, financial advisory, savings products, mutual funds and insurance brokerage. The Treasury Division provides financial products to companies in the wholesale banking and the middle-market segments. This includes products, such as short-term financing and funding, securities brokerage, interest rate and foreign currency derivatives, securitization services and other tailor made financial products. The Treasury division also manages its trading positions.

Corporate Activities

The Bank has a Corporate Activities segment comprised of all other operational and administrative activities This segment includes the Financial Management Division, which manages global functions, such as the management of its structural foreign exchange gap position, its structural interest rate risk and its liquidity risk. The Financial Management Division also oversees the use of its resources, the distribution of capital among its different units and the overall financing cost of investments.
